What are Archival records or Archives?
Every place and person has a history which is embedded in thousands of manuscripts, records, inscriptions, documents, etc. These records are unique and are scientifically preserved and restored. They help us to understand the history of a particular region, society or person. They provide evidence for legal purposes, ownership rights, demonstrate how organizations operate and lifestyles of people etc. These records are called Archival Records or Archives.
In short Archives or the Archival Record is the storehouse of historical records/documents and the physical places where they are located. They consist of records that have been selected for permanent or long-term preservation on the ground of their enduring cultural, historical or evidentiary value.

A brief history
The word ‘archive’ is derived from a Greek word “Arkheia” meaning public office or town hall meaning public office or town hall in which important documents or files are kept under the authority of “Archon”, a title referred to a specific public office.

In 1972, Ernst Posner published Archives in the Western World. He was referred to as the Dean of American Archivists due to his contribution to the developments of American Archival theory and practice.
